Less Bang, More Whimper…

And just like that the 2026 World Cup is over. Yes there’s the third place play off ‘final’ but I made the mistake of doing that in 1990 and I said never again. So we will fly to New York City today, Friday and head back to the UK on Monday, just in time for my speed awareness course on Tuesday. We will watch England on the telly for the first time, which will be weird, and watch the final at a bar too. May the best team win that, and may that team be Spain.

Yesterday was another day when those very special memories you make take root and spread their own wings in our minds taking on a life of their own. Let’s face it, we only have one life as far as I know, so you may as well give it your very best shot. No matter the result of the game, what happens around it is what really makes life that little bit more special.

Kirsty was coming down with a flu like situation so we decided to avoid the early morning meet up in the Hudson Grille near the stadium and duck the Atlanta heat as best we could. We had a wonderful Turkish meze breakfast at Agora Midtown, and as with everything Atlanta, the staff were just lovely. We were greeted at the door by a little porcelain version of Bob Ross, the presenter of the 80’s and 90’s TV show ‘The Joy of Painting’ which made a comeback during Covid because it was such slow and relaxed TV. Our Joyce used to love watching it and Kirsty felt that it may be a sign that Joyce was watching over us.

Bob Ross at the door!

Our favourite stadium in the US is the Mercedes Benz in Atlanta. It’s an amazing design, has a roof and has full air conditioning of course, but it’s also smack in the middle of the city and really easy to get to via the MARTA rail system. It is surrounded by bars and places to eat. Given Kirsty was suffering we decided to get to the stadium early, enjoy the AC and get a beer at very affordable prices $8-9 per pint.

I did warn anyone who asked that England fans would be outnumbered at least 10-1 by Argentinian fans. This fact still surprises some England fans, but in the three previous World Cup games I have been to, when we played that lot, they always had huge numbers. I also told everyone that they are the most graceless bunch and tend to treat opposition fans with total disrespect and contempt. That’s probably why they appear to be the most disliked fans in world football. As the whole of South America sings ‘Latinos Americanos menos Argentina’ which translates to ‘Latin America minus Argentina’.

Argentinians everywhere

Anyway we were in the stadium three hours before kick off, but already the place was full with Argentinians. We saw some familiar faces and had some great chats, Mark and Sam were in early too as was Thomas from the FSA and Free Lions.

Myself, Thomas and Kirsty just below the BBC gantry

The BBC team had set up their broadcast podium at the entrance to the main England supporters block and we could see Messrs Chapman, Rooney, Richards and Hart were preparing for the day of punditry.

That screen again!

I was determined to feel relaxed throughout today, no matter what so the run up to kick off really felt good for a change. England had made some changes with Rogers coming in for Saka or Madueke, and Reece James and Djed Spence returning at full backs.

Colin was back
Barrie on the big screen

We had seats that were one row back from the front directly behind the goal. For some reason we were not allowed to drape our England flags in the way that the Argentinians had been allowed to do the same at their end, directly opposite us.

We enjoyed watching our players doing their drills.

Was this a sign of things to come?

The National Anthems were interesting. Ours was first and the Argentinians just sang their own songs doing their best to drown us out. As I said, they are a classy bunch.

Check out the Argentinian end – all their fans singing and jumping throughout our anthem

We topped up sitting next to our mate Darren, the Leicester City fan who had funded his trip out here by giving up alcohol completely for the past three years.

Darren, Kirsty and myself

The game kicked off and the atmosphere was electric. So much noise. So much passion. So much expectation. So much pressure. As predicted the Argentinian players laid into ours physically and used every trick in the book to wind our lads up. It was always going to happen and it was always important not to rise to their bait. The ref clearly decided to keep his cards in his pocket though.

I thought we had an excellent first half without creating too many chances, but Argentina really didn’t create much either. I felt positive at half time that if we kept this up, with a bit of luck, we could win this and I was convinced it could be a one goal game.

It felt like the second half got underway quickly and before we knew it we had scored what I thought would be the all important goal. It was a great move right in front of us, Rice, Rogers and then Gordon to completely undo their defence.

Happy days!

But when I figured out that there was still at least half an hour to go, I felt we needed the second goal, get that and we would win.

The remaining time seemed to elongate and expand so it felt it went on forever. My phone was blowing up with messages about why we had gone defensive and were letting them come at us. I decided to ignore my phone. But we really were sitting back and defending. It felt ominous and I think there was about six of seven minutes of normal time left and still 1-0 up, but we were blowing all over the pitch. Substitutions had been made by both sides and everything was becoming one big blur.

And then Fernandes scored their equaliser. It couldn’t happen to a nicer bloke. If they got one, they were going to get two. And they did. The ground erupted and we were out of the World Cup at the semi final stage again.

Kirsty is distraught

The England players came over to salute us and us them. Not one boo or anything negative from us fans, yes we’re all gutted but we had not turned on the players, and nor should we. They, like us were shell shocked.

Gutted
Let’s hope we can build a team around Jude
It’s what supporters need to do

We took our time in the ground, even though we lost, days like these don’t come along often, so it’s worth just soaking it all up. Mark and Sam came to join us and we headed to a bar where some of Mark’s friends were. It was about a 25 minute walk in the Atlanta heat, but we when we got there we were greeted by Sammy, Mark and Sam’s friend by a red London telephone box. We went into the phone box and exited out of the back of it into a great bar come Speak Easy. This was The Red Phone Booth and it was a private, invitation only bar. It felt like something out of Kingsman.

You open the phone box and then open the wall of the phone box to get inside

The Evas were in town doing their now legendary ‘flying visit to the game where England get knocked out of the World Cup’ again. Steve, Alan, Jack and Jed joined us and caused their usual level of chaos. But it’s always great to see them and it wouldn’t be a World Cup without them making an appearance.

Alternative view

Billy, Spanish Dave, Bella and Obi also joined us and the evening did go a little off the cuff. Billy and I had a very poignant discussion as to whether either of us would ever get this close to a World Cup final in our lifetime again. That was deep, and that was real. We shall see.

Billy was shell shocked / we all were

Kirsty and I had to do a piece for BBC5Live Breakfast. We were both lagging but managed to put some words together inside the phone box which was like an oven.

Mark aka Alan Gilzean, Spanish Dave, Bella and Sam
BBC5Live piece you can just about hear me and Kirsty’s few words from the phone box

Eventually everyone said their farewells and drifted off, a bit like the game did earlier. I needed to get Kirsty back to our hotel as she was feeling awful with this virus, not helped by the beer and gin of course. And we had agreed to do a BBC Breakfast TV interview to do at 1.30am local time. That was always going to be a challenge, but needed to be done. And so it was. And that was that.

Don’t Cry For Me……

So today is the day. Our old and I would argue our biggest adversary in international football, Argentina, awaits. This is my third semi final of a World Cup that I will have been ‘lucky’ enough to attend in person. Turin 1990 and Moscow 2018. Both times it was not to be. Maybe this is third time lucky, maybe not. This time however, I am very, very relaxed. I have absolutely no idea why, but maybe it’s because after 44 years of following England away at World Cups and Euros, I have finally realised there’s not much I can do about it.

Yesterday was a great day back in the wonderful city of Atlanta. I think this is my favourite US city that we have visited on this trip. Everyone we meet out here is friendly, polite and welcoming. It really does feel good to be back.

We arrived at 2am Tuesday morning and had to get some sleep. Nevertheless we had a busy morning, with work calls and a West Ham call and then an interview.

We headed Downtown to Meehans to meet with friends. Colin and Barrie were in there, Billy, Bella, Spanish Dave, Biscuits, Berry and Obi too. Ben and Mike also popped in to see us and have a beer too.

We settled in to watch Spain absolutely smother and then demolish France. I don’t think England fans knew what to make of it really. France had been the stand out team of the tournament, yet they hardly had a kick. Mark and Sam made it to the bar for half time and all was well. France exited the World Cup not with a bang but with a whimper. A real shame. But it showed exactly how good Spain are, and my prediction that Spain were the only team who could beat France came true. Another World Cup Final for Spain and well deserved.

Meehans Downtown

I then got a call from Mitch, the Atlanta United fan who we had met at the Dr Congo game when we were here last time. The good news was that Mitch was in the area and could drop into see us.

Mitch and Colin reunited in Atlanta

Mitch is such a great character, very, very funny and extremely knowledgeable about sport. He told us why he had always supported Brazil as a boy, ‘because they had players that looked like me’ and how Brazil had got him into football. I introduced him to everyone and he told us all he had just three words to say to everyone: ‘It’s Coming Home’. It brought the house down and everyone had a sing song to celebrate.

A nice little sing song

Post match we decided to head over to The Brewhouse which had been taken over by the Block 109 lot earlier in the day. Block 109 are the so called hardcore England fan group who arrange meet ups at home and away games.

Sadly, Kirsty was flagging badly, she’s now got the same chest infection that has dogged me for so long, so sadly she had to head back to the hotel. We said goodbye to Mitch, Sam and Mark. Obi, Dave, Billy and myself took a Waymo to the Little Five Points district. Obi and Dave were in a Waymo for the very first time and it was hilarious. Waymo got itself a little confused at one point when we were trying to pull up and alight, but it’s great experience and you don’t have to tip! I think the boys were convinced by driverless cabs now.

Kirsty, Billy, Spanish Dave, Mark, Sam, myself, Obi and Mitch

My Mexican friend Roberto who we had last met in Mexico City actually lives in Atlanta now so we agreed to meet up. The Brewhouse looked like it had become home to a post zombie apocalypse of England fans. Roberto said he was at the bar, but I couldn’t see him. I did notice a man in a Mexican Ochoa (their legendary goalkeeper) shirt with his back to me, but this man’s hair was way too short. But an Ochoa shirt here, what’s the chances? So I tapped him on the shoulder and when he turned around there was Roberto’s smiling face to greet me. He had been growing his hair for a year ‘until Mexico won the World Cup’ but had cut it all off when they lost to us hence my confusion!

We also met up with one of Billy’s mates, Katy, the ‘Atlanta Bee’, who was seriously hardcore Atlanta United. The bar decided to call last orders early, clearly the staff had had enough and probably had taken enough cash that day to have an early night.

Katy said she would show us around The Beltline which is a massive, ongoing urban revitalisation project. Apparently, this will transform 22 miles of historic disused railway corridors into a contiguous loop of multi-use trails, parks, and transit. When completed by 2030, it aims to connect 45 city neighbourhoods. Right now, nearly 15 miles are fully completed and open for walking, running, scootering, skateboarding and biking.

Me, Billy and Dave popped across to the OutKast mural to get a picture with Andre 3000 and Big Boi before Roberto drove us in his frankly enormous pick up, to the next destination, The Victory Sandwich Bar. The name may have been a bit misleading although it did do fantastic little, yes little, sandwiches. This was a world away from The Brewhouse and a lovely little haven for a few beers and a bite.

Me at the OutKast mural

We then took ‘drinks to go’ and had a walk along the Beltline taking in the skatepark which was stacked out with skateboarding talent, supplemented by tricksters on Lime Bikes and electric scooters.

Roberto kindly drove me, Berry, Biscuits and Dave home and Billy, Obi and Katy to hit the next night spot.

Kirsty was back at base and suffering with a really bad chest. The game would be a challenge in more than one way.

Who knows what will happen today. All we know is that the winner plays Spain in the World Cup Final.

We are going to head to New York in any case as trying to get a flight home we could actually afford out of Atlanta proved to be beyond our budget. New York has far more affordable options home.

I am supremely relaxed. And for me, that’s progress.

May the best team win. And may that be England.

The Food That Built America….

Sunday post match was pretty much a write off for me. Back on antibiotics and no drinking. It could be a whole load worse, I could be properly ill or worse still not here in Miami.

What it did mean was I needed to stay in bed and rest and in order to do that, I needed some interesting TV to watch for a few hours.

I stumbled across the History Channel and into an episode of World War Two with Tom Hanks. This was billed as the greatest World War Two documentary series ever made. After watching a couple of very well made episodes, I would counter that if anyone has ever seen the landmark series, The World At War, made by Thames Television in 1973, they may dispute that claim. Nonetheless it was very interesting and passed the time.

Without any fanfare, The History Channel seamlessly offered a segway into a series called ‘The Food That Built America’.

This was a drama doc, and I watched few episodes which covered the invention of the mass produced donut by North Carolina’s finest, Krispy Kreme and the rivalry with Boston’s Dunkin Donuts. The scale of the entrepreneurial endeavour by the founders back then rivals some of Silicon Valley’s finest today.

Another episode delved into the explosive growth of the fast-food industry, charting the assembly-line transformations that built the McDonald’s dynasty and the rise of rivals like Burger King, Wendy’s, Taco Bell, and Kentucky Fried Chicken.

This was actually water and not Coca-Cola

Then an episode centred on the battle between Lays and Green & Green who made Cheez -Its and Nabisco who made Ritz Crackers.

My packet of Lays whilst writing this

Over time all these brands have become multi billion dollar properties which have been bought and sold multiple times in corporate mergers and acquisitions. Very much a tale of corporate America.

The episodes were fascinating, but what was equally interesting for me was the fact that the ad breaks were stacked full of adverts not for those products, but for healthcare services and weight loss drugs.

You have to wonder if the ‘foods’ that made America great could also be making Americans pretty ill. Indeed these foods have gone global years ago and have spread American culture and some of the unwelcome side effects far and wide. I wonder if the makers of the weight loss drugs will eventually buy out or be bough out by some of these companies?

On the subject of feeling ill, the rest had done me good and rather than while away the hours, I decided to have a shower and go and meet Kirsty and Adrian who had found a decent Sushi place.

Whilst I was doing that I caught up on the post match interview ‘controversy’ between Tuchel and Bellingham. Given that both men had been to football hell and back a few minutes before their interviews, I was not surprised. OK Jude had put in a huge shift physically and mentally and Thomas less so, but it’s hardly surprising that both said what they said. Here are two people who just want to win, every single time. I welcome that and know that I’ve not seen an England team fight quite as hard as this in World Cup or European Championship knock out matches, ever.

You can hear my thoughts, along with Pat Nevin and Tim Vickery on BBC5Live. It felt like we all agreed pretty much on the situation. Which means we could all be wrong of course!

BBC5 Live interview on Tuchel and Bellingham’s ferocious will to win

As I stepped out of our hotel, it was like stepping into a sauna, but worse. Within a couple of minutes I was sweating profusely, but did feel better about myself for making an effort. Along the way, I bumped into Supes who was headed off to the airport and then onwards to home. He had come out with Billy before the tournament started having gone to Bogotá, Mexico City and Panama so had been away for five and half weeks. Like most of us he didn’t think we would make the semi final. That was the same as Reg and Marc who were leaving the World Cup later today to continue their global travel adventures. Three real examples of loyal England fans who just could not afford the latter stage tickets. I bid farewell to Supes. Sad to seem him go.

I dabbled with a bit of Sushi and later we met up with Obi, Cass, Adrian, Reg and Marc. Cass was staying in Miami and would head to New York should we beat Argentina. Obi was off to Atalanta and Adrian was heading to Boston to then go to New Jersey for the final no matter what. Billy, Bella, Spanish Dave, Biscuits and Berry had left that morning on a road trip it to Atlanta.

Cass, Kirsty and myself

It was a shame to break the team up, but time and money constraints are a reality like never before out here at this World Cup. Everything is expensive, even if you earned the right to ‘cheaper’ tickets through the England Supporter’s Travel Club. Add to that there’s an extra knockout round for those lucky enough to progress and it’s really hard to not spend even money. And that’s if you have been able to spend some time courtesy of the kindness of friends along the way like we have. We’ve been lucky.

I was pleased to get back to my bed and rest up.

Atlanta again, and Argentina await. As far as I am concerned this is all bunce now. I have made my peace and am determined not to dwell on the past and look forward to a great game of football between two teams who both know what it means to win, and to lose.

Goodbye to Miami
